EVLT Treatment is a revolutionary, nonsurgical treatment for the removal of unwanted varicose veins. It is also effective in the treatment of chronic leg pain, leg swelling, venous ulcers, and restless leg syndrome.
How does it work?
Varicose veins are caused by blood going the wrong way into veins which are just under the skin. By inserting a small laser into the abnormal vein, we are able to stop this backward flow of blood and redirect it into the healthy veins. This cuts the blood flow to the abnormal veins and they shrivel up and disappear.
Is it covered by insurance?
EVLT Treatment is currently covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. We will verify with your insurance company that it is covered in your plan prior to proceeding. If you do not have insurance or have an extremely high deductible, we can discuss affordable payment options with you.
How long does the procedure take?
On average EVLT Treatment takes approximately 10 minutes.
Does it hurt, and what is the recovery time?
It is normal to have some minor discomfort during the procedure. We have performed over 3,000 procedures and have never had to discontinue the procedure because of patient discomfort. Your comfort is our 1st priority. We will do everything that we can to make this as relaxing and comfortable of an experience as possible. There is no recovery time needed. The procedure can be performed during your lunch break with immediate return to work. We encourage you to walk after the procedure.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects are minor bruising or discomfort in the area of the treated vein. Also, occasionally patients will experience tingling or "pins and needles." This normally resolves in 3-4 weeks.
How successful is EVLT?
It is successful approximately 98% of the time. The vein will actually stay open about 2% of the time. If this occurs, we simply will re-treat the vein.
Are there alternative treatments?
The traditional treatment, vein stripping and ligation, requires general anesthesia, pain and a long recovery. We do not recommend this. All other forms of treatment including foam sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, Vein Gogh, and sclerotherapy are also performed in our vein centers. This may be an adjunct to your treatment plan.
What is a microphlebectomy?
Microphlebectomy is a technique used to remove certain varicose veins that are still visible after EVLT. EVLT is extremely effective in removing the high pressure venous blood varicose veins. However, in some patients, the veins will still be visible. Microphlebectomy will completely remove the vein wall so that there is no visible vein remaining.
How is the procedure performed?
This is done in the office here at Ohio Vein Specialists. One millimeter incisions are made in order to introduce a small hook which is used to pull the vein from the tissue completely. Generous amounts of numbing medication are used so that the you will be comfortable throughout the procedure. There are no scars since the incisions are microscopic. The incisions do not require sutures since they are so small.
What can I expect after the procedure?
There may be some minor bruising or soreness. The improvement in cosmetic result is immediate since the vein is being completely removed. There is no recovery. We encourage you to return to your normal activities immediately.
Does insurance cover microphlebectomy?
For the most part, private insurers and Medicare will cover this procedure. We will get authorization from you carrier prior to the procedure.
What is VeinGogh vein treatment?

How does it work?

How long is a typical treatment?
Depending mainly upon the size of the area, treatments can range from about a minute for minor lesions on the nose, and up to 20–30 minutes for a more extensive condition covering much of the face or legs.

How many treatments are needed?
Generally 2-3 treatments depending on the severity or number of spider veins. More treatments may be required.
Will the veins come back?
Veins will be successfully removed 60-70% of the time. Treatment may need to be repeated.

On a scale of 1-10, VeinGogh is a 2-3.
On what size vessels does VeinGogh work best?
VeinGogh works best on spider veins up to 0.3 mm. VeinGogh is not designed to treat feeders or larger vessels deep beneath the surface. To effectively treat leg veins, VeinGogh should be used in conjunction with sclerotherapy.

What is sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the traditional method used to eliminate spider veins and smaller varicose veins. It involves injecting a sclerosant (generally a salt solution) directly into the problem vein. The sclerosant irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to shrink and stick together. Over time, the vessel will be absorbed by the body.
Am I eligible for sclerotherapy?
Prior to sclerotherapy, you will normally have an initial consultation with Dr. Meyer who will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.
You are not eligible if you are pregnant. If you have had blood clots previously, your eligibility will be determined on an individual basis by Dr. Meyer, and will depend on the overall health of the area being treated and the reason for the clot.
Also, veins that could be used for future heart bypass surgery will generally not be treated by sclerotherapy, unless the veins have been deemed unusable.
What are the side effects?
You might experience some itching, which could last for one to two days. Also, you may experience raised, red areas at the injection site. These should disappear within days. Bruising may also occur around the injection site and can last several days. Other potential side effects may include discoloration or pigmentation of the skin (also known as “tattooing” – though it is not always permanent).
How effective is sclerotherapy?
Studies have demonstrated that as many as 50%-80% of injected veins may be eliminated with each session. Less than 10% of patients who have sclerotherapy do not respond to the injections at all.
Is sclerotherapy covered by my insurance?
Coverage for sclerotherapy varies with carriers. If your varicose veins are causing pain or chronic swelling, your insurance may offer reimbursement. Sclerotherapy performed for purely cosmetic reasons will most likely not be covered by your insurance carrier.
